I am staying right next to Vatican City. I seems like a very safe area. The guy who checked me into the hotel said that there are millitary barracks right around the corner, so it keeps this area pretty quiet. There sure seems to be a lot of graffiti though.
I took a subway train into Rome. Right into the middle of all the hustle and bustle of this enormous city. Then I got on the wrong train to come back to my hotel. I got lost for a while, but I ended up taking a city bus back to where I am staying. It was frustrating, but at least I saw a lot of other areas of the city.
I am suprised that more people don't speak english. I guess I was just naive, but I expected more people to at least speak a little english. It is weird not to be able to communicate at all with some people. I went to this electronics store to buy a plug adapter so that I could use my computer and plug it into the outlets that they use here. I ended up having to act out what I needed. It was like charades (sp?), only it wasn't fun, and the guy was totally serious and even a little unfriendly.
I will try to add a picture to this post at another time. I have to use the hotel computer right now because the wireless signal is down.
I already severely miss my family. I got to talk to them on a phone in the subway, but it was really loud. We will try again tomorrow.
